What do the prefixes tell us?

A word is often made up of a prefix-word root-suffix. Where the suffix tells us whether the word is a noun, a verb or an adjective and the word root tells the root from which the word originates but the prefix on the contrary tells us more than just its positive or negative implication. Let’s take a look.

‘Intro’ is used for inwards as in introspect to look inwards and ‘extro’ is outwards as in extrovert to be outspoken. ‘Ambi’ another prefix is used for ‘both’. We very well know mono-,bi- and poly- are for singular ,for two and for many. ’peri’ another prefix means surrounding like in perimeter, ‘endos’- inner is used in the biological term endoderm that is the inner layers of the skin.

‘com’ is used for ‘with’ for e.g.com-patriot ,company etc. Another similar prefix here is syn-that is for together which becomes ‘sym’ sometimes like in sympathy , otherwise in words like synergy it is used as it is.

Adding a-as a prefix makes any word negative like asymmetric so does the prefix in-, dis-another prefix is something that has many negative denotations like against, or not in the same orientation for e.g. dis-oriented . Prefixes do tell us a lot about the nature of the word being dealt so a little homework might just help you a lot more than you would have thought.

More info on certain words and phrases

a) Does burning incense sticks infuriate you?

This question might be a startling one, well no friends this is not a scientific research but is one of the phenomenon observed in the English language. The word “Incense” which means something that produces a fragrant odor when burnt also means to make very angry. The word has extreme meanings one is to please someone and other to infuriate them, so this fact can be kept in mind while using it.

b) What is the principle of your principal?

Yet another word that leads to confusion in usage. How many times have you addressed the letter to the Principle of your institution? These details are minute but they do leave an impression of how detailed and observant you are. These mistakes do occur due to lack of concentration at times but if a doubt occurs in your mind every time you come across the word you need to work out something.

Principal with an ‘a ’is the head of an institute or the main part whereas the Principle are rules or values.  A little something can be set to remember like the ‘Principal’ is often not your ‘Pal’ and the ‘Principle’ of life is simple.

Get your homophones right

Homophones or words that sound similar are often very challenging when you are about to use them. For e.g. Eminent is a renowned person or thing whereas imminent which sounds very similar is something which is just about to happen. Eligible is a bachelor whereas illegible is something which is not clear. So a little caution, is suggested while putting them to use.

How to escape the trickery of words?

Well the only way to escape the trickery of words is to not get tricked. Knowledge is your only weapon.

Similar looking words are not always similar in meaning. For e.g. Husbandry which is the management of resources has nothing to do with being a husband, well it is slightly related but cannot be depended upon for a direct connotation. Likewise Depravity which sounds a lot like something similar to deprive but without bearing any resemblance in meaning, it means extreme wickedness. Deleterious which looks like a distant relative of Delete is something that means harmful. Categorical which sounds like something category wise means absolute or in totality .They are not very difficult to trace so keeping a note of these notorious words can help you stay smart?

Communication is the art of exchanging views, opinions, ideas and news among people for various purposes. It is an inherent part of our existence and constantly happening. Communication is the crux around which the world revolves. Staring from communication between two people, a group, and encompassing different countries, it is communication that keeps everyone connected.

In the absence of communication, it would be difficult to know the happenings around us. Communication must be done effectively to achieve the purpose. The intended meaning must be conveyed effectively to the desired recipient to achieve the purpose. In the eventuality of any distortion, the whole purpose is defeated. Besides, failed communication also gives rise to misconceptions and many a times to conflicts.

There have been instances when things have been distorted through various mediums. Hence, it is extremely important to identify the medium of communication. The channel of communication used must be capable of conveying the desired purpose. Communication binds people and countries together. It can surely be said, it also fosters ties.

Communication is known to bridge the gaps and make ties stronger. Since, communication is a potent tool of exchanging information; care must be taken to ensure that communication is used for a good purpose.

How to improve your pronunciation?

Pronunciation is a tricky part in the English language. Before beginning the exercise you must keep in mind a certain yardstick that you’d follow. Certain pronunciations vary when spoken in British English and when done so in American.

  • While referring the dictionary do read the phonetics or the pronunciation. Try to write some of the phonetic representation yourself.
  • Try speaking words out loud and slow.
  • It is very important to understand how to read the pronunciation.Certain essential features should be kept in mind.
  • (‘ )used in front of an alphabet signifies a stress on that alphabet while speaking.
  • The alphabets mentioned in capital are supposed to be stressed.
  • An “oo” is indicating a long pronunciation with a bar above it.
  • A broken bar over the individual o’s indicates broken pronunciation.
  • A small (I)is used for a long (ee) sound.
  • An inverted ‘e’ or ‘ә’ is called a schwa which is used to signify a very short sound for a vowel for eg. mother is pronounced like (MUTH ә)
  • At times to denote the “zha” sound for eg in closure zh or ᴣ is used.

How to debate?

Debating is a strong tool or rather a method,  dialectical to its core which persuades us to indulge into an intense discourse. An integral part of the procedure in Presidential elections of the States , debates bring out the truth no matter how diligently concealed it might be.

Debating is an age old art and like any other form it too has its share of rules too. The judging panel is of supreme consideration. They should be formally addressed before the speaker begins. As per the norms there are two sides to be represented in a debate: For and Against the motion. Each team consists of two members for representing both the aspects of the given topic. The first speaker introduces the topic and puts across his point consequently followed by the opponent team member who speaks addressing the point of the previous speaker. The trick here is to jot down points from the previous speaker’s speech and prove how they do not hold ground. This not only makes your base strong but also establishes yourself as a serious listener and prompt speaker.

Decorum and sanctity of the dais should be maintained, no personal remarks or hurting statements should be made. The opponent is not your enemy rather he is helping you to win, so instead you should be humbly thankful to him and let him respect you for your deserved victory.

After the speaker concludes he/she often says “resolved” which means that the point has been explained.

How to write better?

  • Don’t delve into complexities; simpler words are more user friendly because not everybody’s putting as much efforts as you are in learning them.
  • Try not using adjectives unless you have just started creative writing skills in school, instead try using metaphors or phrases.
  • Grammar which is not paid attention to by many (not all) in the new generation, must not be avoided, at least the basics. It’s good to know why you write a certain way and what would you do in similar situations. Knowledge of grammar is like your own set of tools which can be borrowed but it’s better to own your own set.
  • You must be aware of basic terminologies to know their significance. Like a clause is a sentence with a subject and a predicate and a sentence is constituted of a clause at times one or two. You should know what a subject and a predicate is. A subject is a noun or a noun substitute which is being talked about and the predicate is that what is spoken about the subject.
  • Certain verbs should be used carefully like is, seem, will be, has been etc. they are known as linking verbs. They unlike showing an action show a state of being, a certain verb can be and cannot be a linking verb as per its usage. For e.g. The plant grew in size and His popularity grew.
  • Combining clauses pose a serious problem among writers, avoid long sentences and use proper punctuations. Errors in joining clauses are called run-on and comma splice. They occur when a sentence consists of two independent clauses which have not been connected. For e.g. He played she sang, it consists of two independent clauses viz. he played and she sang but they have to be connected to form a sentence. The clauses can be joined like He played while she sang. This is a simple example but it does help enhancing the credibility of your command over the language.
  • While writing quote certain authors and site some phrases, this adds weight age to your piece. Mention the source to avoid plagiarism.

What is the difference between practice and practise?

The difference is all in the grammar practice is noun for e.g. Law is a practice whereas practise is a verb where you are executing a task of practising something. The same trend is followed in exercise and exercise, and licence and license. Now how can this mild difference be kept in mind. Like always a mnemonic is the solution or I shall say it only CaN SaVe you .Where you have a C is a noun and words which have a S is a verb.

What is the right spelling stationary or stationery?

Some spellings are doomed to let us commit mistakes. This is definitely one of those, with all due respect to our ignorant souls both these spellings are right. Stationary is for objects that do not move and are positioned at a place, whereas stationery is the shop which sells paper, pencils, drawing instruments and well stationery items. Now how can this be remembered. Stationary with an ‘a’ is for a standing body with a prominent ‘a’ and thus it is for fixed bodies and stationery with an ‘e’ is where you find a cutter with an ‘e’.
