How to individually contribute towards environment

How to individually contribute towards environment?

Environment must not be an issue that should be close to the heart of environmentalists only. It must be important to everyone. The environment we live in is of our own making. Mother earth, gave enough to all to meet their needs. It is the human greed that exploited nature for personal gains and played havoc with it.

The startling increase in the environmental deterioration is the biggest proof of this act. The depleting ozone layer, the melting ice glaciers, deforestation and the other imbalances that have taken place of late rare staring right in our face.

If we don’t wake up to these perilous revelations now, then nothing can save us. Maintaining the greenery around us, keeping the environment clean, abandoning use of plastic and other non-degradable substances are all small things that will go a long way in ensuring greenery. Practicing such things can at the least prevent further damage to environment and possible alter the looming threat.

Spreading the environmental cause on a wide scale can bring about positive changes. Educating people through various mediums about the cause can go a long way in increasing awareness about the issue. Let everyone do their bit and see the change!

What are the causes of environmental pollution?

When man’s population was small and technology was in its infancy, environment could easily absorb human and industrial wastes. With increasing human population, contamination of environment is also increasing. This contamination of environment, in scientific language, is termed as pollution.

“Pollution may be defined as a change in physical, chemical or biological aspects of environment, which makes it harmful for humans, for other living organisms, and for cultural assets”.

The basic cause of environmental pollution lies in man itself and the activities adopted by him. The clean lands, exhaust of fresh water resources, gases released by human activities play a major role in pollution. Beside this, some natural causes are also responsible which includes volcanic eruptions, UV radiation, soil erosion, dust storms, decomposition of organic matter etc. But the major control of this problem lies in human hands only. And fortunately man realized his mistakes in 1969 and started to take steps to avoid pollution of environment, but not to the desired extend. But still a number of International programmes had been started by International authorities.

What is Ozone layer and Ozone hole?

Ozone layer is a layer above earth’s surface, which prevents the harmful ultra-violet rays from entering in the earth’s atmosphere and reach us. These uv rays are harmful for mankind as they may cause mutations which may cause various types of cancer as skin cancer. They may sometimes prove to be lethal (dangerous for life).

In 1985, a hole in the stratosphere layer of the earth’s environment was discovered above the Antartica, which shook the world. Further studies on this issue revealed the cause for this depletion and was found to be human activities. The major reason was the chlorofluorocarbon (CFC). It is produced by human activities. Many effort had been put forward by International unions and environmentalists to reduce the CFC production, and we have been successful to a great extend. Now fewer CFC is entering the atmosphere, as the use of this fridge gas has been banned all over the world.

But still, the amount of CFC already present in the atmosphere is sufficient to continue the damage of ozone layer for atleast hundred more years. Another small hole has appeared over the North pole. Ozone layer is thining over Europe and North America.

Though now we have realized our mistakes environment, but we have to suffer along way due to its consequences.

July 11, World Population Day and Effect of Global Warming

July 11, World Population Day and Effect of Global Warming

July 11, World Population Day

July 11, is observed as world population day. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1989, established this day to be celebrated as world population day. The population of the world has touched an alarming phase, and we all are responsible for the consequences which we are facing and the hidden effect though invisible but most effective. Today, we are facing global problems as global warming related to environment, unemployment. The visualized effect of increasing population can be seen over the developing countries as India.

Paul Ehrlich, Professor of Population Studies and Biology at Stanford University, warned for this emerging population very earlier in his book “The Population Bomb”.

This year the world population is expected to reach seven billion and United Nations Population Funds (UNFPA), has declared seven billionth day on the account of population.

In India, state government has launched a campaign called “Save Girl Child”, this day, to make people aware and raise the thinking level of the people over the decreasing sex ratio.

How to prevent Global warming?

We all think that if we were like him, we would have done much better than him or what we can do we don’t have power. But have you ever really sat down and thought,

“What exactly, till now is your contribution towards the nature and is it worth?”

It’s quite easy to judge others and skip the situation by blaming them. But we ourselves can do a lot of things. A single effort of us can bring a huge change. We are facing the current problem of global warming. So its time to really contribute from our side, by few of the simple things-

  • Plant trees.
  • During traffic or red-light, just off the ignition of your vehicle. It saves petrol/diesel.
  • Try to buy solar equipments and objects rather than those working on electricity. This saves electricity and reduces green house gases too.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Always power off all the electrical equipments while they are not in use.
  • Keep the water tap closed while you brush your teeth, this can prevent about 8 gallons of water every day.

Effect of global warming on polar bears

We all are familiar with the term global warming, which is caused by the release of various harmful gases present in the environment. These gases increase the average temperature of the earth, and thus the temperature rises. This rise in temperature plays an adverse effect role for the life of many of the organisms, which are live in cold environment and have their habitat in low temperature only. They cannot survive in the increasing temperature. One of such organism is polar bear . But now, their life is also threatened. Now, polar bear cubs are forced to swim long distances with their mothers as now their icy Arctic habitat is melting. Polar bear hunt, feed and give birth on ice or on land, but they travel hundreds of miles to reach ice platforms or such ice covered lands. Here young polar bear may have greater risk to travel very long distances.

So, it had become an urgent need to take serious actions against global warming and implement them, so that we can save our beautiful mother Earth and her beautiful creations in form of life.
